Syrah

Wines made from Shiraz are often quite powerfully flavoured and full-bodied. The variety produces wines with a wide range of flavor notes, depending on the climate and soils where it is grown, as well as other viticultural practices chosen. Aroma characters can range from violets to berries, chocolate, espresso and black pepper. No one aroma can be called typical though blackberry and pepper are often noticed. With time in the bottle these primary notes are moderated and then supplemented with earthy or savory tertiary notes such as leather and truffle. Secondary flavor and aroma notes are those associated with several things, including winemakers’ practices, and terroir.

2007 Dry Creek Valley Syrah
Dry Creek Valley

This is a smooth rendition of a rich and spicy varietal. Black pepper and toasty oak characterize the aromas. Flavors by mouth include ripe cherry, pomegranate and dark chocolate, displayed with intensity and fullness on the palate. The texture is round with a fine-grained finish. Sufficiently sturdy and substantial, this wine will hold up to rustic and spicy dishes. Ready to enjoy now with smoky barbequed brisket before the weather gets too brisk to tend to the back yard Weber; otherwise, present it in the winter months with a braised lamb and olives.

2008 Madden Ranch Syrah
Livermore Valley

We are very excited about the Syrah grapes from John Madden's Livermore Valley vineyard. Madden Ranch has 20 acres of Concannon clone Syrah--one of the oldest Syrah clones in California--all on 5BB rootstock. Located on the warmer eastern edge of the Livermore Valley, there are three different vineyard blocks on the ranch, each with a different slope and aspect.

Grapes were harvested on September 30, 2008 and each lot was taken to our winery where a 3 day cold soak was followed by yeast inocculation. The wine was aged ina mixture of French and American oak for 18 months before bottling.

"Our 2008 Madden Ranch Syrah releases its fresh sromas of red cherry, blueberry, plum and roasted coffee from the glass. At first sip, the Syrahhas a myriad of juicy red and black fruits that fill the palate with intricate supporting flavors of chocolate, licorice, mushroom and nutmeg. 2008 Fiery Nights - Syrah
Briarwood Estate Vineyard

Fiery Nights is our pure expression of Westside Paso Robles Syrah. From a single block of calcareous soil at Briarwood, it is comprised of clones 383 and Alban 2. This 100% Syrah is meant to highlight the layers and complexity of the varietal, as well as express how our terroir influences its character. Our proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the consistent afternoon flow of cool Templeton Gap breezes allows our Syrah to achieve characters of both a warm and cool climate. Seeking finesse over power, the fruit was hand picked in September at ideal ripeness and treated gently, including multiple hand sorting and whole berry fermentation. The resultant wine is balanced, complex, and pure, just as we wanted it.

The nose speaks of rich, juicy plums highlighted by baking spices, licorice and sweet ginger notes. The palate is round and balanced with good weight that avoids being heavy. Flavors mirror the aromas, with dark fruits taking center stage. To sum it up clearly, Fiery Nights is a wine with old world class and new world sass.

2005 El Dorado Syrah
El Dorado County

Our Syrah comes to us from a two acre vineyard in Somerset in El Dorado County. The soils are typical of hillside vineyards, shallow and well drained. The fruit was harvested in ½ ton picking bins. Treated similarly to Pinot Noir, a small amount was fermented as whole clusters and the entire must was chilled down to cold soak for extraction. After a spontaneous fermentation started with indigenous yeast we did punch downs every two hours also helped for extraction of flavors and depth of color. The wine was barrel aged for 18 months in neutral American oak. The resulting wine is dark and full with Rhone style richness. The slightly floral aromas precede earthy flavors, rich fruit character, subtle cloves and the moderate tannins call for aging.
