Port

Port wine is a sweet Portuguese fortified wine from the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal. It is often served as a dessert wine. Several imitations of Port are produced around the world in several countries—most notably Australia, South Africa, India and the United States. However, under European Union guidelines, only the product from Portugal may be labeled as Port. In a similar vein, Federal law in the United States mandates that the Portuguese-made product be labeled Porto or Vinho do Porto.

This is the "Seventh Edition" port from the Schweiger Family. From our estate Cabernet Sauvignon grapes we created this smooth, intense port. Crushing of the berries is minimized to increase color extraction resulting in a fermentor filled with whole berries. During the fermentation, the wine is punched down three to four times a day, slowly liberating juice from the berries to the fermenting must. Around twelve degrees brix is when the real magic occurs: the brandy addition. The brandy is produced from wine made from either Pinot Noir or Chenin Blanc grapes, which is then double distilled in a traditional alambic still to 142 proof. The sudden spike in alcohol conent from the brandy addition arrests the fermentation, leaving the natural sugar from the grape in the finished wine. The wine is then aged solera style, with different vintages being blended together to produce the most complex aromas and flavors possible. Enjoy with family and friends. ONLY FIVE BARRELS PRODUCED.

Winemaker Notes (Mike Lancaster): This port has a deep black plum color and aromas of dried cherries and plum on the nose. There are hints of floral notes from the Viognier brandy that was used to fortify the wine. The port is full and rich in the mouth with a lovely finish of dried fruits and cocoa. Aged in two year old barrels for 21 months, the wine shows hints of caramel and coffee on the palate. A perfect balance between alcohol, residual sugar and acid will allow this port to age well for many years. Only available through the Tasting Room at Family Wineries and here.

The white port is lower in alcohol, acid and residual sweetness than the red port.
