Petit Verdot

Petit verdot is a variety of red wine grape, principally in classic Bordeaux blends. It ripens much later than the other varieties in Bordeaux, often too late, so it fell out of favour in its home region. When it does ripen, it is added in small amounts to add tannin, colour and flavour to the blend. It has attracted attention among winemakers in the New World, where it ripens more reliably and has been made into single varietal wine. It is also useful in ’stiffening’ the mid palate of Cabernet Sauvignon blends.

2004 Petit Verdot
Santa Ynez River Valley

Limited release - Our Petit Verdot, one of Bordeaux’s oldest and rarest varieties, is grown at the crest of a high hill overlooking the Santa Ynez River Valley. Normally we use all of the wine in our Valley View Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2004 we had just enough to produce a small bottling on its own of this lovely, inky-dark red wine. Full of violet scents mingled with black stone fruit flavors, it’s a big hearted, big bodied wine for that special occasion when only a true rarity will do. Rated at Red Wine Buzz.

Paso Robles

The Petit Verdot grape has always been the understudy to the more famous Bordeaux varietals, Cabernet and Merlot. The traditional purpose for this varietal is for blending with other wines to give them better color and tannins. While we too are guilty of this practice, we have made a conscious effort to give Petit Verdot some recognition. The color is dark with aromas of black cherry and pepper. The mouth feel is full bodied, with firm tannins and silky finish. For those who like, big youthful red wines, grab some venison, buffalo or a tri-tip steak off a Santa Maria grill and enjoy.

2005 Petit Verdot Grand Reserve

This wine had become a cult wine because of its unique and subtle flavor. Aged in new French oak it takes on a richness that makes it elegant and refined to the palate. Blueberry, french vanilla, and cassias are predominant with black currents finishing off the flavor. An excellent sipping wine for those who know good wine and like to share it with friends.
