Petite Sirah

It is definitely one of the grapes known as the Petite Sirah variety which is extensively planted in California, although other analysis has shown that in vineyards with the most reliable planting records it may only be one of three distinct varieties known collectively as Petite Sirah.

2008 Black Orchid - Petite Sirah
Briarwood Estate Vineyard

Hailing from the western edge of Briarwood, our Petite Sirah grows in a block of mixed soils that comprise both calcareous limestone and rocky alluvium. You can practically draw a line through the block where the soils are clearly defined on either side. Black Orchid is 100% estate-grown Petite Sirah and is exactly as its name implies, black. This wine is meant to display not only the powerful profile of the variety, but also the depth and complexity that it derives from our terroir. Hand picked in September, the fruit was de-stemmed, double sorted, then cold soaked for multiple days prior to fermentation. An additional 6 months of barrel aging helped to soften the tannins and improve oak integration. The end result is a deftly balanced wine with an inky profile and layers of fruit.

Jumping out of the glass with aromas of dark, ripe fruit and notes of tobacco leaf and cedar, this wine means business. The palate is layered with dark fruits and spice, reminiscent of olallieberry syrup and cloves. This wine is big, bold, and rich with inky phenolics and subtle undertones of soy. Black Orchid is the most muscular offering of our 2008 wines.

2005 Private Reserve Petite Sirah
Santa Clara Valley

This very limited Guglielmo family specialty opens with dark plum and tart cherry fruit aromas with a potpourri of spice. This grape’s typical black pepper component is backed by cinnamon, leather, and a dusting of oak. The plum and pepper elements continue to the palate leading to a lingering dried fruit finish. Medium-bodied in style, this wine should be the perfect accompaniment for grilled beef, leg of lamb, and game dishes.

WINEMAKERS NOTES:
Produced predominately from old vine Petite Sirah first planted by our Grandfather over 70 years ago. These vines continue to yield a Petite Sirah of unusual depth and character. To add complexity to the nose we included a small portion of Santa Clara Valley Merlot. This wine should continue to open up and gain additional complexities in the bottle for at least another 5–8 years. The 2005 vintage yielded approximately 556 cases.

Each whiff offers a new series of aromas-blackberry, licorice, cola, black pepper, plum and more. Then all of these characteristics reappear on the palate, tightly wrapped around the raspberry and vanillin oak core. The robust flavors and mouth feel beg for sheppard's pie, beef stew, tri-tip grilled medium-rare or a decadent chocolate dessert. Give this wine a little little cellar aging and you'll find it hard to keep your hands off it.

Alex Vyborny's vineyard, located in the heart of the Alexander Valley, is the source of Deux Amis' 2004 Petite Sirah. The terraced, low yielding vineyard produces incredibly intense and rich fruit year after year.

2004 Portentous
Mendocino

"Port-Style" Dessert Wine. This late bottled vintage “port” was a dream to make. The grapes were crushed and chilled down to 45°F and allowed to sit on the skins for six days, extracting flavors and color. We then added yeast and slowly allowed the fermentation to begin with close monitoring, in order to press off the skins and add our brandy at optimal sugar to stop the fermentation. The blend was then transferred to older barrels and allowed to age for 2 1/2 years before bottling.

The grapes are grown on extraordinary mountain vineyards in Mendocino County. The Petite Sirah comes from the Talmage Bench area just west of Ukiah on the eastern side of the valley. It is grown at an elevation of approximately 1,400 feet.. The grapes get very ripe, and give spicy berry fruit with dark, black inky color.

The Zinfandel comes from the Mendocino Ridge Appellation and is grown at an extreme elevation of 2,900 feet. These are very renowned grapes and grow right on the edge of what is deemed common for viticulture, resulting in very concentrated cranberry-raspberry flavors and aromas.

2005 Petite Sirah Estate Grown
Shenandoah Valley, California

Petite Sirah contains generous amounts of tannin, color, and backbone. Most often used as a blender for just these reasons, it can be difficult to make a varietal wine. Understanding these difficulties, we constructed a winemaking plan to maximize the varietal characteristics and minimize bitterness and harshness. The first step was to ensure the fruit had enough varietal character to complement their tannin and color. The grapes were harvested at the peak of ripeness to yield the maximum amount of fruit character possible. These fully mature grapes had the additional advantage of lower amounts of “green” or “harsh” tannins. In order to minimize the remaining “harsh” tannins, our Estate Petit Sirah was fermented in our stainless steel Submerged Cap Fermentation Tanks to ensure the resulting wine tannins would be “soft”. We then aged the wine in French and American oak barrels.

Inky dark purple in color the wine has an elegant nose that begins with blueberries and raspberries. Fruit gives way to cocoa and vanilla. On the palate notes of pencil shavings leads to mint, violets, smoked meats, and white pepper. The acidity in the long pleasant finish balances the tannins and

Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard 1 reviews
2003 Durif
McDowell Valley

Durif is one of many grape varieties that is grown in the Rhône Valley of France and it is one of the varieties allowed in Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. Early in the 20th Century cuttings of Durif from the Rhône Valley were shipped to California, but during this process the cuttings were given the name Petite Sirah. There really is no such thing as Petite Sirah in France, it was simply a name applied to the Durif grape when it was first brought over to the U.S. Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard has been labeling this variety by its “real” name since 1977.

Whatever you want to call it, this particular release has a massive structure which is balanced by an equally impressive depth of fruit and spicy, smoky complexity. The smoky, spicy elements are wrapped around a whole lot of blackberries and other dark fruit. This one needs a looooong wake-up call in the decanter at this point and should age for quite a few years. Have it with a nice cut of beef or lamb and it should work beautifully.

The grapes for this wine come from plantings in the McDowell Valley appellation of Mendocino county from 1948. These old vines produce wines with a lot of flavor intensity and the kin
