Grenache

Grenache is probably the most widely planted variety of red wine grape in the world. It ripens late, so needs hot, dry conditions such as those found in Spain and in the south of France. It is generally spicy, berry-flavoured and soft on the palate with a relatively high alcohol content, but it needs careful control of yields for best results. It tends to lack acid, tannin and colour, and is usually blended with other varieties such as Syrah, Carignan and Cinsaut.

2004 Grenache
Dry Creek Valley

I am proud to say this is one of the few California Rhone-style blends that will have you thinking of the Vaucluse (Southern Rhone). It has intense aromatics of raspberry, tar, pepper, dried herbs, with a silky, sexy texture on the palate. It is a skosh riper and lower in acid than our previous vintage. Is this my favorite Unti wine? Ya think? It should improve until September 24, 2007. After that, drink it as often as possible.

2005 Grenache
Dry Creek Valley

Clearly our most concentrated, full-bodied and structured Grenache blend to date. It has intense aromatics of raspberry, blackberry, tar, pepper, licorice, and dried herbs. On the palate it has a juicy, silky texture with firm but entirely ripe tannins. This is, by far, my favorite wine we’ve ever made here at Unti. It has the stuff to last at least 5 to 7 years, but should really start showing its stuff in two years.

2006 Grenache
Dry Creek Valley

If our 2005 Grenache resembles a Chateauneuf du Pape, this 2006 is more like a Gigondas – meaning it has higher tone fruit and pepper with bright acidity. It has intense aromatics of raspberry, blackberry, tar, pepper, licorice, and dried herbs. Though more fruit forward than the 2005, this Grenache has the stuff to last at least 3 to five years, but should really start showing well in two years. We really love making this wine.

2005 Grenache
Paso Robles

Grenache is always blended with another grape because the tannins in Grenache are naturally very low. Consequently, Grenache all by itself does not age well. You will often find it blended with Syrah and/or Mourvèdre. We were very happy with the nose and the flavors of the Grenache, so we tried blending it with a minimal amount of Mourvèdre to add spice and backbone to the Grenache. Think of it as a hearty Pinot, with lots of strawberry notes.

2004 Rockin’ One
Paso Robles

The Grenache was cropped from an estimated 10-12 tons per acre to 4 tons per acre to improve the intensity of the flavor and the color. They were hand picked and delivered to Dan Kleck at his facility in Paso Robles in 2004, the year before we opened our own winery. We were very happy with the nose and the flavors of the Grenache all by itself. We added what we felt was the minimum amount of Syrah to add backbone to the wine without overpowering it.

We think it still smells heavenly, with aromas of fresh cherry, raspberry, plum, pepper and allspice. While a bit softer than our 2004 vintage, it is still full bodied and slightly chewy and should develop quite nicely over the next few years.

2006 Garnacha
Clements Hills

Our Garnacha is reminiscent of the dense, spicy, Spanish red wines produced from this variety in its area of origin – Aragon . Due to minimal irrigation and severe pruning, its smaller berries and higher skin-to-juice ratio give it a deep color showing bright red hues with a tinge of blue. Subtle notes of pomegranate and cassis reveal themselves along with a slightly floral quality in the nose. Complex layers of strawberry and bright fruit combine in the palate for a delicious, lengthy finish. A medium-bodied wine, this Garnacha shows excellent balance, fresh acidity and bright flavors.

2004 Grenache
Santa Barbara County

Grenache seems to be enjoying more and more success around the world. In the past, we have primarily used Grenache as a blending grape for wines like Revelation. But last year we made our first 100% Grenache wine (called Gypsy, this year we are calling it Grenache) and we had outstanding results! (And feedback!) So, we are very excited to once again have this wine back in the tasting room. Our Grenache was primarily grown on Rodney’s Vineyard at the Fess Parker winery. This is one of the last blocks we pick every year and 2004 was no exception. After picking the grapes in mid October and fermenting the grapes for 15 days, we aged the wine in 100% Cadus French oak barrels. We decided to put the wine into year-old barrels to ensure that the oak flavors would not be too dominant in the finished wine.

This wine has wonderful aromatics and shows bright cherry & strawberry fruit flavors on the palate. You’ll find enticing cinnamon/spice notes reminiscent of apple pie along with slight smoky, toasty oak flavors. It is a wine with good balance, structure and soft, approachable tannins. We believe it is an age-worthy wine, but also bet it won’t last long in your cellar after you

2003 Grenache (Private Reserve)

This is a French style red wine that was produced from different clones of 100% Grenache grapes. The wine was aged in small oak barrels to produce a round and luscious varietal character. This is a thoroughly enjoyable wine with a classic Grenache spice that pairs nicely with mildly-spiced white meats (pork or chicken).

2002 Garnacha Grenache Reserve

This is one of our specialty niche wines that is hard to find anywhere else. Grenache is typically a light, fruity wine used for blending. It can be similar to Pinot Noir in flavor and texture, though the color is a lighter red. However, the grenache out of our source vineyard in 2002 showed a very distinct warm spice that we thought should come forward on its own. We kept it in oak an extra year to beef up the tannins. A lot of warm spice (e.g. cloves/cinnamon) come through on this unique vintage. Grapes grown in Guadalupe Valley, Baja California, wine made in Escondido.

A trip to the southern Rhone without the airfare! Possibly our biggest, richest version of Grenache to date! Our vineyard was frosted badly in mid-April 2005. The resulting tiny crop produced this intense, generous wine. Mouthfilling blueberry, cranberry and super-ripe strawberry flavors are balanced by the crushed rose petal aromas. We'd consider this wine a medium weight that will go with many dishes, including duck and lamb. 363 cases produced.
