Claret

Claret is a name used in English for red wine from the Bordeaux region of France, along the valleys of the rivers Gironde, Garonne and Dordogne, including Medoc, Graves and St Emilion. Claret wines are sometimes divided into Left and Right bank Clarets- Left bank clarets include the Medoc, Graves and Pessac-Léognan, whilst Right bank clarets include the St Emilion and the Pomerol. There are also numerous lesser appellations which are sometimes referred to as Clarets, such as Fronsac.

2002 R.V.s Fine Claret
Santa Cruz Mountains

This wine is our only blend, made from four of our estate vineyards: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Cabernet Franc, and 24% Merlot, all aged in French Oak for 22 months and blended during the second year.

Rich garnet in the glass, leading into a nose reminiscent of dried plums, blueberries, raspberries, and - yes - dark grapes! The palate finds ripe bing cherries, lush berries laced with a kiss of cassis, and richly tanned leather with hints of fine pipe tobacco. The velvety, smooth finish lingers with the wine's easily elegant structure.

94 Points, "Exceptional" Wine & Spirits Magazine, June 2007

"...Compressed into its cold, hard mountain tannins, this estate-grown cabernet, merlot, cabernet franc blend needs a day of air to reveal its foresty fruit. Given enough oxygen, it feels cool rather than cold, with dense, soil-inflected tannin that's powerful but can't completely hide the lush fruit underneath. It feels like it will live a long time, a wine to check on ten years from the vintage and likely to enjoy for many years after that."

2004 Claret, Carmody McKnight Vineyard
Paso Robles

Our 2004 Carmody McKnight Vineyard Claret is a vineyard designated blend of 39% Cabernet Franc, 33% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Carmody Mcknight Vineyard is located in western Paso Robles on Chinney Rock Road in the rain shadow of the Santa Lucia Coastal mountain range. This dark purple wine had aromas of ripe cherry, blackberries and clove. Rich fruit flavors of cherry and plum are followed by tannins and a long finish. The bright fruit, low pH, and excellent structure of this wine make it a candidate for extended cellaring. This wine can be served with rich cuts of meat, poultry or with pasta.

Blackberry, cherry, raspberry and cassis continually change places in this wine depending on the food pairing. These complex berry flavors balance well with the acid and firm tannins add longevity. Try this with rack of lamb, duck or grilled veal chop.

2005 Donati Family Vineyard Claret
Paicines

This blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, & Petite Verdot shows ripe red fruit on the nose, with dark fruit, chocolate and dusty notes on the palate. Well-integrated tannins give the wine an easy-drinking style that will satisfy now, and continue to improve in bottle for several years to come.

2002 Claret
Central Coast

Claret, an old British term that can be used for a Bordeaux red wine is used by me for this fine blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc (both from the Carver Vineyard atop York Mountain) and 30% Merlot from the Radike Vineyard grown in the Templeton Gap. I harvested the Merlot in late September. The fruit was destemmed, transferred to an open-top fermenter via gravity and went it’s own course with indigenous yeast. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc were harvested in mid-October. This fruit was handled in the same manner. After fermentation to near dryness, the musts were lightly pressed, the wine transferred to new and one and two year old French and American barrels. The wines were racked 3 times and bottled unfined & unfiltered in August 2005. The rich aroma of ripe dark berries intermingled with toasty oak combine with full-bodied complex flavors and smooth tannins to make this beverage wonderful for any occasion.

2004 Cliff Lede Claret
Napa Valley

This fruit forward and friendly wine is brimming with violets, blueberries, ripe plum, and blackcurrant. Initial aromas of star jasmine, red and black currants, and wild strawberry are framed in the glass by a wealth of uplifting floral high notes, with just a hint of cherry and citrus. On the palate one is greeted with pie cherry, blueberry tart, and lots of kir. This mouth-pleasing entry quickly expands into fullness across the palate suffused with crème de cassis of some density, gradually relegating to a soft finish of plum and a gentle tannin complex.

1995 Claret Prestige

At twelve years of age, this wine now displays its beautiful bouquet and graceful, classically proportioned character. Elegance, complexity, aromatic persistence. It is nearing its full maturity and should drink well for at least 5-10 more years.
